Spud’s Quest is an interesting attempt at combining the platformer and adventure game genres, which isn’t all that surprising given that it is heavily influenced by the old Dizzy series, though parts of it feel disjointed. This game is certainly ambitious and there are many parts of it which I enjoy, but this is definitely one of my more tentative recommendations as there are some very rough edges and in many ways it feels like two different games.

NOTE 2: This game seems to be based on an anime called Sengoku Otome: Momoiro Paradox, which looks awful, but at least the game’s good!

I’m not sure as to exactly when I fell in love with the bullet hell subgenre, but I do know that I always enjoy stumbling across worthwhile entries and Sengoku Youkai Daikassen is one such entry. Taking place over the course of six stages (or ‘steges’ according to the in-game Engrish) in Warring States-era Japan, this horizontal shmup offers enough Continues to make it a good entry point for those new to the genre and enough nuance to its scoring system to satisfy most bullet hell veterans.

Dora the Explorer Boss

By all rights an action platformer in which Dora the Explorer is a boss should be a rushed, barely functional game made primarily as a joke, especially when it bears the impossible-to-ignore GameMaker Lite watermark. This should certainly be the case, yet Generic Man is amongst the better freeware Mega Man-inspired platformers out there. This is not to say that its flawless, the level design could certainly use some work in spots, but Generic Man both adds some nice twists to the Mega Man formula and takes advantage of its exceptionally varied assortment of ripped sprites in some really creative ways.
