First Impression: Northwall

RPGMaker.net Page

This First Impression article is based on about an hour of gameplay and may not necessarily be indicative of the game as a whole. This includes the score at the end.

Northwall is a game I didn’t remember many details about when I started it up other than that it might have had some good reviews (it does) so I really wasn’t sure of what to expect from it. With its heavy reliance upon RPG Maker’s default graphical assets and an opening that goes on for too long before giving you control of a character, Northwall‘s quality only grew more doubtful by the minute. However, the combat system rapidly dispelled my doubts as to the game’s quality and by the end of my time with it I was eager to play more.

Three Ghostly Roses

Three Ghostly Roses

Edmund Brigham doesn’t know where he is, or even who he really is for that matter, but with an image of a rose burning in his mind he’s prepared to travel across a strange and hostile land to discover his purpose. Three Ghostly Roses is an indie RPG as ephemeral as its name, lasting only about three hours, but it’s an excellent story told exceptionally well. Though the central story is a rather serious one, it’s peppered with bits of humor and supported by a custom, evolving turn-based combat system where you’ll be dropkicking skeletons and uppercutting demons.

The full article will arrive on Thursday, August 24! Something pretty serious ended up happening recently. I’ll write the rest of this article once things settle down. Sunday, August 27 is the tentative release date for this article, but that might end up changing.

From Next Door

RPGMaker.net Page

With a description stating that this game “draws inspiration from the works of Junji Ito and games like Silent Hill” and that it contains “mild jumpscares” I was prepared to either fall in love with From Next Door or be horribly disappointed – I was not disappointed. Even though it’s only about an hour in length, this game’s pace is an extremely slow burn, slow enough that after a few minutes you might start to wonder if those ‘jumpscares’ are just going to be fake-outs without anything legitimately frightening ever happening. Yet this slow pace is what makes the game work so well because the sense of tension continually builds even when nothing is happening. A neighboring house with no windows, a mysterious locked room, and a growing sense of unease are all it takes to make you expect an unknown horror to at last abruptly reveal itself every time you turn on the lights at night.

Demo – Soma Spirits

Soma Spirits Title

RPGMaker.net Page

Another day another demo and today’s demo is for the RPG Soma Spirits. This is a much shorter demo than the one for Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass, consisting of an introduction, a small dungeon, and a boss fight to cap things off, but this is a much smaller project (the estimated length for the completed game will be two to three hours) and the demo still effectively shows off the game’s most important features within this short span.

Demo: Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass

Jimmy Title

RPGMaker.net Page

This article marks the beginning of a new section on Indie Overlook because I’ll be covering a demo for a game still in development. Like with the extra articles and those for player-created content, the structure and general length of this segment is probably going to change over time. To properly inaugurate this section, today’s article will be covering the demo for an RPG I have been looking forward to since it was first announced – Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass.
