Edmund Brigham doesn’t know where he is, or even who he really is for that matter, but with an image of a rose burning in his mind he’s prepared to travel across a strange and hostile land to discover his purpose. Three Ghostly Roses is an indie RPG as ephemeral as its name, lasting only about three hours, but it’s an excellent story told exceptionally well. Though the central story is a rather serious one, it’s peppered with bits of humor and supported by a custom, evolving turn-based combat system where you’ll be dropkicking skeletons and uppercutting demons.

This First Impression article is based entirely upon my experience with the game up to shortly after the end of the second dungeon, which you can see in the above video, as well an an initial playthrough of the demo, which ends at the title card drop after the first dungeon. This article is not necessarily indicative of the game as a whole. This includes the score at the end.

Shattered God is an action RPG where the focus is heavily placed upon its rather unique combat system, though the rest of the game feels competently made as well. Outside of combat, the game mostly plays like a standard RPG where you bounce between dungeon delving and talking to NPC’s in towns, though it’s not made in RPG Maker so it does benefit from the addition of a few mechanics which are difficult to replicate in that engine and it has a distinctive appearance. The combat system is the heart of this game though and it is a wonderfully frantic, surprisingly difficult, blend of timing and multitasking.

The Legends of Owlia seems like it is so concerned with ticking every box in a checklist that it never stops to polish up anything. Though there are plenty of bits and pieces of nostalgia here, the experience as a whole feels completely sparse. This is a rather unusual game because it really does capture the feel of a NES game, but that includes various outdated design practices and many of the better mechanics are hamstrung by mediocre execution.

Ghostlords is in some ways a Pok√©mon game with ghosts, though it also deviates from that formula rather significantly. The game is divided into several campaigns and it seems like each of them can be completed within about two hours, give or take. I’ve only played through part of the first campaign so far, so I can’t speak for the other ones, but the story’s tone is on the darker, edgier side of things. In the first campaign, the protagonist is on a quest to rescue her husband as she fights for her life against evil future-police in an alternate version of the United Kingdom after an apocalyptic event.

This new pseudo-sequel to Voidspire Tactics, which may be my favorite game from 2015, polishes up the existing formula while adding in some useful features and taking a rather large risk along the way. The risk in question is the introduction of procedurally generated areas which incorporate handcrafted rooms and, for the most part, this is a success. This is a shorter and in some ways a much more straightforward game than its predecessor, but it’s also cheaper, the procedural generation gives it more replay value, and the various improvements and new features allow Alvora Tactics to stand on its own as a great addition to any game collection.
