Hollow Knight Title

Hollow Knight

Official Site || Steam Page

I knew I would probably like Hollow Knight from the start, but I was not at all prepared for it to resonate with me as much as it did. With the release of Bleed 2 last month and with virtually guaranteed heavy hitters like Iconoclasts and La-Mulana 2 on the horizon, 2017 is an incredibly exciting year for indie games, yet Hollow Knight may very well end up as my favorite game of the year. With a massive world to explore, an outright ridiculous number of secrets, a combat system which manages to feel extremely fluid while giving each and every attack a sense of weight, and an atmosphere which seamlessly combines some good old-fashioned Dark Souls gloom with lighthearted humor, this is one experience which is far from empty.

The Floor is Jelly Beginning

The Floor is Jelly

Official Site || Steam Page

The Floor is Jelly is a colorful and relaxing drop of chaos. It can be quite demanding at times, but generous checkpointing, instant respawns, mellow atmosphere, and the constant lack of precise control caused by the floors, walls, and ceilings all being made of bouncy jelly make even failure fun. Not willing to stop at just turning everything into jelly, this game introduces a string of delightfully experimental surprises from start to finish.

Gum+

itch.io Page || Game Jolt

Gum+ is a puzzle game where you can discover firsthand the difficulties inherent in being made entirely out of gum. The goal of every level is to push around blocks and fill in gaps to reach the exit, but your spatial logic will be pushed to its limits as the protagonist sticks to every block it touches and even the most simple of tasks can prove to be surprisingly difficult.

Bleed 2

Official Site || Steam Page

If you want to see the right way to make a sequel, you need look no further than Bleed 2. The same fantastic time-slowing, air dashing, run and gun gameplay from the original is back, but with an expanded character roster, a slightly smaller, yet more refined arsenal of weapons, and the addition of color-based bullet deflection. A new and very noticeable layer of polish has also been applied to everything from the graphics to the menus, improving upon the first game in virtually every way. 2017 has just started, but Bleed 2 is already looking like it will be a strong contender for one of the best games of the year.

cloudphobia

Steam Page

Long ago, I stumbled upon the demo for cloudphobia and expected to never be able to access the full game as it was only available in Japan, so seeing an official Steam release for this game was a massive, nostalgia-fueled surprise to say the least. Setting itself apart from every other shmup I can remember, cloudphobia incorporates a strict time limit into each of its levels and players must make use of a speed boost ability to complete each stage before running out of time while also watching their own health as well as the health of the unseen mothership. If you ever thought the shmup genre could benefit from some added complexity, then this is definitely a game you won’t want to pass up!
