God of Thunder

If you had a computer in to 90’s, you probably also had at least one CD with hundreds, maybe even thousands, of shareware games on it. Sure, these types of CD’s are still around, but back in the day the games on these CD’s were pretty much the only commercial indie games around. Buried between hundreds of chess, mahjong, and tic-tac-toe clones, these obscure games are truly hidden gems.

Coming from an era where the term ‘indie game’ didn’t even exist and the expected method of payment consisted of sending money in the mail to a P.O. Box and hoping the developer 1) still lived in that area and 2) bothered to send you the password to unlock the full game, many of these gaming relics have been buried deep beneath the sands of time, lost and forgotten. God of Thunder is one such game, now free on Steam, and it contains all the cheesy humor, rad tunes, silly sound effects, and somewhat clunky combat you might expect from a 1994 shareware game alongside some design decisions which feel surprisingly ahead of their time.

Terrible jokes, great music, memes, and a desktop screen containing the best use of a Samuel Beckett play I have ever seen are some of the most important parts of this existential skateboarding game. With no way to lose, a vague goal of collecting 1000 ‘aesthetics’ shaped like cups which make old Windows sounds when you touch them, and the ability to skate on any surface in any direction with no fear of crashing, this is a short and very relaxing experience where players are free to explore and interact with the world at their own pace. Griptape Backbone is mostly made up of bits and pieces of meaningless nonsense, but this is one case where the whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts as all these abstract objects and pop culture references do come together to convey a surprisingly powerful message. The ending is particularly good, but the roughly one hour journey to get there is also worthwhile in its own way.

I knew I would probably like Hollow Knight from the start, but I was not at all prepared for it to resonate with me as much as it did. With the release of Bleed 2 last month and with virtually guaranteed heavy hitters like Iconoclasts and La-Mulana 2 on the horizon, 2017 is an incredibly exciting year for indie games, yet Hollow Knight may very well end up as my favorite game of the year. With a massive world to explore, an outright ridiculous number of secrets, a combat system which manages to feel extremely fluid while giving each and every attack a sense of weight, and an atmosphere which seamlessly combines some good old-fashioned Dark Souls gloom with lighthearted humor, this is one experience which is far from empty.

The Floor is Jelly is a colorful and relaxing drop of chaos. It can be quite demanding at times, but generous checkpointing, instant respawns, mellow atmosphere, and the constant lack of precise control caused by the floors, walls, and ceilings all being made of bouncy jelly make even failure fun. Not willing to stop at just turning everything into jelly, this game introduces a string of delightfully experimental surprises from start to finish.

Gum+ is a puzzle game where you can discover firsthand the difficulties inherent in being made entirely out of gum. The goal of every level is to push around blocks and fill in gaps to reach the exit, but your spatial logic will be pushed to its limits as the protagonist sticks to every block it touches and even the most simple of tasks can prove to be surprisingly difficult.
